New research indicates that you can continue to improve after a stroke much longer than previously believed. A stroke or cerebral vascular accident (CVA) is caused by a lack of blood flow to your brain either from a blood clot blocking one of the small arteries or a broken blood vessel. The brain cells are injured and are no longer able to tell your muscles what they should do.

Our program focuses on regaining the use of your arm and hand. You will learn to correct movement patterns that help you regain the motion in your arm. Recent research shows that repeating specific movements can help other areas of the brain take over the job of the injured cells.

Your program may include special splints to promote use of your hand or stimulation to muscles that you are unable to control. If you have limited use of your arm our program can help you reach for independence.

  • Use your arm as much as possible. Repeated use stimulates the cells in your brain to promote recovery.
  • Monitor your blood pressure at least weekly. Be aware of the symptoms of change in blood pressure. They can include dizziness, light-headedness or headache.
  • Check the skin on your arm daily for redness. Due to limited sensation you might not feel a cut or bruise.

  • Individualized Care
You are teamed with a therapist who has specialized training in stroke recovery. A thorough evaluation allows you and your therapist to set individualized goals for your program.
  • Improved Motion
  • Your therapist will train you in guided movement patterns using the specialized equipment chosen for your specific needs. Our therapists are trained using the latest advances such as the Saeboflex assisted motion device.
  • Increased Independence
  • Activities will be chosen and progressed in order to use and improve your current abilities. For activities that are difficult, your therapist might suggest equipment to improve your independence immediately..

    • Pain with your exercise program. Pain may be a warning sign that you are causing damage to your arm or hand.
    • Losing your balance. Weakness, limited motion and a change in your posture can cause difficulty maintaining your balance. Follow your doctors instructions if you have a cane or walker.
    • Letting your joints get stiff. Be sure to understand the exercise program your therapist prescribes.
