Kinesiotape

Kinesiotaping is a relatively new treatment technique being used by therapists in conjunction with an individualized treatment program to help patients control pain and improve movement. Kinesiotape can be used to re-educate the neuro-muscular system, reduce pain, enhance performance, prevent injury, and promote good circulation and healing.

Kinesiotape is different from other types of popular taping techniques because it is elastic and can allow full range of motion. It is made of cotton so it allows for evaporation and a quicker dry time making extended wear times possible. It can generally be worn three to five days at a time. The adhesive is 100% acrylic, which makes it safe to use with patients who have latex allergies. Tape application can usually be easily taught to the patient or a family member as part of a home program.

It has gained a recent increase in popularity due to its use with Olympic athletes, including beach volleyball gold-medallist, Keri Walsh. However, the majority of users are non-athletes. Eighty-five percent of applications are not sports related

Certified Kinesiotape Practitioners (CKP) are therapists who have completed the necessary training and testing to ensure the safe and correct application of kinesiotape to facilitate maximum results. Hand & Upper Extremity Rehabilitation has a certified kinesiotape practitioner available to provide this expertise for your patients.
